This was a "family holiday" so no climbing pictures - just some tasters for what's there if the opportunity arises.
Stormy weather clearing off the north face of La Meije
An alp above the Romanche valley
Later in perfect weather, Kathryn at the Clot de Chavala (2416m) below La Meije
and then on to the Col des Ruillans (3211m).
(La Meije, Le Rateau and the Glacier du Rateau)
On a "free day" I headed out of La Berarde towards the Refuge Temple Ecrins.
Tete du Cheret above the Veneon,
Plan du Carrelet,
…and a 180º panorama from the foot (2618m) of the west ridge of Pic Coolidge.
(Les Bans, Mont Gioberney, Pics du Says, Tete du Cheret, Pointe du Vallon des Etages, Cime de Clot Chatel, Cime de l'Ecoula)
On the other side, the west face of the Barre des Ecrins
Later, some unusually low lying snow well below the Glacier de la Pilatte with Mont Gioberney in the background.
A trip from Les Deux Alpes to the Dome la Lauze provide another Ecrins panorama
A little diversion to the limestone of the Vercors plateau…
… and the massive escarpments above Couranche.
Another free day sees me messing around on the Glacier de la Gandoliere
with this view across the Etancons valley
(La Meije, Pic Nord des Cavales, Pic Sud des Cavales, La Grande Ruine)
I had been pleasantly surprised by how empty the area was, but then I spotted the dreaded "alpine crocodile" heading out from the Refuge du Chatelleret 600m below me. Well avoided.
The Vallon de Etancons also provides access to the south side of La Meije
The Rochers de la Grande Pare (just north of the Col du Galibier looked interesting,
and for good food the was always the village of Villard-Reculas, just round the corner for Alpe d'Huez
